Wearable holographic technology offers news ways for AEC professionals to visualise, collaborate and share ideas

Trimble is developing a new generation of tools for Microsoft’s HoloLens technology for use in the design, construction and operation of buildings and structures. Trimble says that with the head-mounted, holographic, mixed reality technology it will be able to create new ways for the participants of complex, multi-phase construction projects to visualise, collaborate, share ideas and manage change.
At Microsoft’s recent Build Developer Conference the company demonstrated how HoloLens could be used with Trimble SketchUp 3D modeling software and the Trimble Connect collaboration platform to improve design and construction processes.
Architects were able to experience SketchUp models as holograms placed in the real world—enabling them to analyse various “what if” design scenarios in the context of the physical environment. The demonstration also illustrated how using Trimble Connect with HoloLens could allow remote teams to review, collaborate and resolve constructability issues in real time.
In addition to Trimble SketchUp and Trimble Connect, Trimble’s initial research is also focused on the integration of HoloLens with Trimble V10 Imaging Rover, an integrated camera system that captures 360-degree digital panoramas.
