Trimble will get cloud-based analysis tools that link into SketchUp for early stage building design optimisation

Trimble has acquired performance analysis software specialist Sefaira, adding yet more depth to its Design-Build-Operate (DBO) portfolio.

Sefaira’s cloud-based software is used to optimise buildings at the early stages of design and looks to be a great fit for Trimble SketchUp, an easy to use 3D tool, popular with architects for conceptual design.

Sefaira analysis can be run with models created in SketchUp or Autodesk Revit.

Sefaira’s cloud based technology enables users to estimate, compare and optimise the energy, water, carbon and financial benefits of relevant design strategies.

In addition, Sefaira provides tools that allow engineers and contractors to derive and analyse HVAC design scenarios from an architectural model.

“Architects rely on SketchUp to understand conceptual design choices and develop constructible models,” said Chris Keating, general manager of Trimble’s Architecture and Design Division. “But today, design is no longer just about aesthetics. Architects need to consider building performance in a more intuitive way, and be able to collaborate better with the engineers who design the systems that make buildings work.

Over the next year, Trimble says it will work to integrate Sefaira more closely with SketchUp, 3D Warehouse and Trimble Connect—as well as with numerous products from Trimble MEP.

“We’d like to make performance-driven design as quick and capable as SketchUp,” says Trimble’s John Bacus. “Simple enough to be useful… and maybe now, useful enough to make a real impact on the built environment.”
