Netflix has announced it will support ongoing development of the open source 3D software Blender through its membership in the Blender Development Fund

The streaming service uses Blender across its animation and VFX studios. According to the company, the software has become part of production pipelines for feature films, episodic series and special effects work.

Blender is a free, open source 3D creation suite supporting modelling, animation, rendering, compositing and motion tracking. The software is developed by the Blender Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Amsterdam.

Netflix’s financial contribution will support the Blender Foundation’s development work, which includes maintaining the core software and developing new features. The fund operates on a membership model, with corporate sponsors contributing annual fees based on company size.

Other corporate members of the Blender Development Fund include Epic Games, AMD, Nvidia and Meta. The fund was established in 2019 to provide stable financing for Blender’s development.

Blender has seen increased adoption in commercial production environments over the past several years. Recent high-profile projects using the software include work on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Next Gen.
