ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD and ThinkPad P16s Gen 4 AMD feature ‘Strix Point’ AMD Ryzen AI Pro 300 Series processors

Lenovo has updated its AMD-based mobile workstation line up with the launch of the ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD and ThinkPad P16s Gen 4 AMD. Both laptops feature the ‘Strix Point’ AMD Ryzen AI Pro 300 Series processor which comes with integrated AMD Radeon 890M graphics and a neural processing unit (NPU) with up to 50 TOPS for AI workloads. As a result, they meet the requirements for Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC certification.

Starting at 1.39kg and 16.13mm thick, the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD is the thinnest and lightest mobile workstation in Lenovo’s portfolio. It comes with a choice of 14-inch displays up to the 500nit 2.8K OLED (2,880 x 1,800). Meanwhile, the Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 4 AMD starts at 1.71kg and is said to combine premium performance and portability. There’s a choice of 16-inch displays up to the 400nit WQUXGA OLED (3,840 x 2,400).

Both the ThinkPad P14s AMD and ThinkPad P16s AMD are built for CAD and BIM workloads and offer up to the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 370 processor with 12 cores, 24 threads and a Max Boost Clock of up to 5.1 GHz.

There’s support for up to 96 GB of DDR5 (5600MT/s) memory and with a unified memory architecture that can dynamically allocate memory between the CPU and GPU, up to 75% of the total system memory can be dedicated to the GPU, which could be useful for AI or visualization workloads. In addition, the graphics driver is certified by ISVs for key industry applications, including those from Autodesk, Bentley Systems, Adobe, Altair, Ansys and Dassault Systèmes.

Other features include Dolby Atmos audio with Elevoc noise suppression, and a 5MP RGB+IR camera with Lenovo View, which uses AI to enhance video calls with features like auto-framing, background blur, and eye contact correction. There’s also support for Wi-Fi 6E/7, optional 4G LTE, and dual Thunderbolt 4 ports.

Both laptops also feature more customer-replaceable (CRU) components, including keyboard, WWAN, speakers, and fan. Meanwhile, ThinkShield security features offer BIOS-level protections, secure wipe, and integrated privacy controls.

What AEC Magazine thinks

Considering that AMD launched its ‘Strix Point’ Ryzen AI Pro 300 Series processors back in July 2024, it’s somewhat surprising that it’s taken Lenovo this long to update its AMD-based mobile workstations. But we expect it might be worth the wait.

We were already impressed with the previous Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 (read our Jan 2025 review), particularly for its excellent serviceability — a big plus for IT departments and power users alike. The new Gen 6 model looks to build on that solid foundation, delivering more across the board: more CPU cores (12 vs. 8), enhanced graphics, and a significantly more powerful NPU for AI workloads. And it’s all wrapped in a chassis that’s slightly slimmer than before — now just 16.13mm thick, down from 17.71mm.

On paper, the ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD looks like a good choice for users of CAD and BIM software who want a power-efficient, highly portable pro-grade laptop. True, it may not match the raw performance of the new HP ZBook Ultra G1a, which features the significantly more powerful, arch viz-capable AMD Ryzen AI Max Pro chip. But with that comes a higher price tag and greater power demands.
