Concrete frame contractor is using the 3D BIM software to help improve the efficiency of its construction projects
Byrne Bros, one of the UK’s leading concrete frame contractors, has adopted 3D BIM tool Tekla Structures to help streamline its preconstruction processes.
Byrne Bros required a modelling tool, which would enable it to produce initial tender models that could be augmented with additional detail so as to form a complete structural model of a building. The primary aim is to utilise the model at all stages in the preconstruction process, from construction sequencing and creating visualisations for bid submissions to initial quantity take off and cost plan estimating.
“From the outset it was clear that Tekla offered numerous benefits in one package, particularly for a specialist concrete contractor,” said Phil Petz, estimating director at Byrne Bros. “We wanted to improve the way we work internally as well as externally with our clients. Having a robust BIM model enables us to exchange information more effectively within the project team and facilitate collaboration to achieve the best outcome.
“We are happy with the results so far and have seen improvements in establishing cost plan quantities and pricing. We have been able to reduce our take-off checking timescales across the board, and on certain projects, the savings over the traditional 2D quantity check have been dramatic. This is a win-win situation for us as a company and for delivering the best possible solution in value engineering for our clients.”
