Is a 4U Server right for you?
If you’re reading this and considering moving to a rack-mount server, you might also be wondering which size is right for your use case. There are four conventional sizes to choose from – 1U, 2U, 3U, and 4U. Each Rack Unit (U) refers to the height of the rack. The bigger the U, the taller the device.
4U Servers come in at 7 inches tall, offering the most space for expansion, storage, and airflow. 4U racks are often used where a business needs multiple full-height PCIe cards, making them the best option for multiple GPUs for super-fast rendering times. The larger space also allows for superior cooling compared to smaller units, meaning components perform better when under intense workloads.
It’s worth remembering that bigger racks and better hardware come with some drawbacks. While you get the best space options and hardware compatibility, 4U racks often require much more power when in operation. Therefore, they are the costliest option.
