Immersive solution designed to help operators better understand the impact of Variable Signs & Signals

Highways England (HE) is using VR for a new training programme to help control room operators better understand the impact of their actions on the experience of motorists using the strategic road network.

The training programme seeks to explain how Variable Signs & Signals (VSS) work and allows operators to experience how their use affects traffic flow and how decisions impact driver satisfaction.

In developing the programme, the HE training team worked closely with MXTreality, a specialist in VR solutions for major construction projects. The team devised five common real-world scenarios, which would be experienced by the operators in an immersive environment using VR headsets and binaural audio through integrated headphones to increase the sense of realism.
