Dell Precision 5820, 7820 and 7920 boast new chassis with front access ‘FlexBays’
Dell has released details of its next generation workstations which will be based on the forthcoming Intel Xeon Scalable Processor family, built around Skylake-SP, with up to 28 cores per CPU. The single socket Dell Precision 5820 Tower and dual socket Dell Precision 7820 and 7920 Towers will launch this October.
All three machines will feature re-designed chassis with front access ‘FlexBays’ that support a range of modules, including lockable hard drive carriers and a Smart Card (CAC/PIV) reader. Storage can be scaled up to 24TB (48TB in the Precision 7920) with SATA, SAS and PCIe M.2/U.2 NVMe SSDs featuring hot swap access from the front of the machine.
The new workstations also feature a new Multichannel Thermal design that is said to deliver advanced cooling and acoustics for quiet operation under demanding workloads.
The Precision 7920 boasts 24 DIMM sots and can be configured with up to 3TB of DDR4 2,666MHz memory with select processors, while the Precision 5820 and Precision 7820 max out at 256GB and 384GB respectively.
For GPUs, the Precision 7920 can be equipped with up to 750W of graphics cards (3 x 250W in dual CPU configuration and up to 2 x 375W). With lower powered models, it can take up to 4 PCIe x16 Gen 3 graphics cards.
The Precision 7820 can host 2 PCIe x16 Gen 3 graphics cards up to 500W, while the Precision 5820 can take 2 PCIe x16 Gen 3 graphics cards up to 600W.
Dell is supporting a massive range of GPUs from both AMD and Nvidia – entry-level to ultra high-end. This includes the Nvidia Quadro GP1000 and Quadro P6000 as well as the recently announced AMD Radeon Pro WX 9100 and AMD Radeon Pro SSG, which features a built in 2TB SSD for handling colossal datasets.
Meanwhile, to celebrate 20 years of Dell Precision workstations, Dell has also introduced a limited-edition anniversary model of its Dell Precision 5520 mobile workstation. The slimline laptop is available with a hard anodised aluminium, brushed metallic finish in a brand-new Abyss colour with anti-finger print coating.
