Maxon automates Cinema 4D with MCP Server

MCP integration acts as a bridge between Cinema 4D’s toolset and an LLM enabling artists to hand off select repetitive, procedural, and iterative tasks

Maxon has added Model Context Protocol (MCP) support to Cinema 4D, enabling artists to use natural language instructions to help accelerate native Cinema 4D workflows using AI services such as Claude or ChatGPT.

The aim is to hand off repetitive technical work while keeping creative decisions with the artist. “Artists retain control while handing off any tasks they consider a chore,” said Maxon CEO David McGavran.

Typical jobs include organising hundreds of imported objects into a consistent hierarchy, creating object and material variations, and preparing multipass renders. The assistants can also help with scene organisation, basic 3D camera tracking, UV mapping, rigging and animation.

Everything runs through Cinema 4D’s own API, in the artist’s scene and on their own machine. Results remain native scene data, so artists can inspect, refine or undo them.

Maxon says security and oversight are central to the implementation. The MCP server is switched off by default and must be enabled by the user. The connection runs locally, with a separate opt-in required to work across other machines on a network. Access is protected by an MCP adapter access token, and users can choose which groups of Cinema 4D tools an assistant may use. Users can also control Python execution, providing an additional safeguard for workflows where code execution is not required.

MCP support is available beginning today in Cinema 4D 2026.4 or later on Windows and macOS. Maxon does not charge for the Cinema 4D MCP Server

Maxon officially supports Claude Desktop and ChatGPT Desktop, and users will need an account for those services. According to Maxon, other AI tools that support MCP should also work, such as local models available through LM Studio, though Maxon has not tested them, nor does it officially support them.

Maxon also points out that as a local model shares your graphics card with Cinema 4D and your renderer, a model that barely fits in graphics memory leaves nothing for rendering, and a slow model can take a minute to create a cube.
