New Lenovo ThinkPad W550s claimed to have best battery life of any mobile workstation

It has the best battery life of any mobile workstation, says Lenovo of its new ThinkPad W550s, which it launched at Autodesk University today. The slimline laptop, which is said to combine workstation performance with Ultrabook mobility, features ‘Power Bridge technology’ and ‘energy-efficient GPUs’ to provide up to 13 hours of battery life.

The machine comes with a choice of HD and 3K touch and non-touch 15.6-inch displays. It features a 5th generation Intel Core i7 dual core processor, an Nvidia K620M (2GB) GPU and up to 16GB RAM, quite moderate specifications as far as a mobile workstation goes.

Starting at 2.23kg and with a depth of 22.4 mm, it looks like this is Lenovo’s answer to the Dell Precision M3800, a new class of lightweight, slimline mobile workstation. However, unlike the M3800, which some have criticized for not bring able to dock, Lenovo’s W550s can plug into an Ultra Dock Docking station, giving it broader multi-monitor support and easy connection to peripherals and the company network.

The machine has a full sized numeric keypad for precise engineering input, but falls down a bit on storage by only offering a single drive: a 1TB HDD or 512GB SSD.

Other features include Integrated 4-in-1 SD card reader (SD, SD-HC, SDXC, MMC), WLAN, WWAN, 3 x USB 3.0 (1 Always-on charging), VGA and mini DisplayPort.
