Device said to be suitable for users of all skill levels and ideal for confined or smaller spaces

NavVis has launched the NavVis MLX, a dynamic handheld laser scanner specifically designed to enhance AEC and surveying workflows. According to NavVis, the professional-grade device is suitable for users of all skill levels and is ideal for confined or smaller spaces or shorter, more frequent scanning on site.

The NavVis MLX measures 60 × 19 × 15 cm, weighs 3.6 kg, and is equipped with an ‘easy grip’ handle and a supportive harness for enhanced comfort during use.

The NavVis MLX is built to work hand-in-hand with the NavVis VLX wearable dynamic scanning system in the field and NavVis IVION point cloud processing software in the office

The NavVis MLX captures 3D data with a 32-layer lidar sensor in combination with SLAM software augmented by Visual Odometry (VO) to deliver what NavVis describes as exceptional point cloud quality for a handheld device.

Four cameras positioned on top of the system take high-resolution 270º images when resting on the harness and 360º images when lifted above the head.

The device can capture 640,000 points per second with an operational range of up to 50 m. According to NavVis, the accuracy of the point cloud is 5 mm in a dedicated test environment of 500 m²

To help ensure complete coverage in real time, users can monitor scanning progress on the built-in 5.5-inch 1,920 × 1,080 resolution touchscreen.

For geo-registration, the NavVis MLX  is ‘fully compatible’ with standard tools in the field and can capture control points measured by Total Stations and GNSS rovers. It supports alignment of datasets as well as national and global coordinates for geo-registration.

Finally, the scanner can be carried in a ‘comfortable yet sturdy’ backpack, which fits snuggly into a protective, hard-shelled case on wheels for rail travel and check-in air travel.

Prices start at £30,900.
